Our View

Gray river rocks glisten in the sun as the mouth of the river is enveloped by the dark green and brown of soaring trees. The jagged stone walls are stained in various shades of brown, yellow, and gray with striations formed through the constant onslaught of the powerful water through the gorge. A flat area of gray stone, covered with a smattering of grass, low lying bushes, dirt, moss, and one lone tree, juts out over the river. Although the roots of the tree appear solidly in the ground, the entire slab seems to dangle precariously over the sharp rocks and swirling water below. From other angles, the tree appears to be nestled safely enough away from danger to enjoy a nice view without the threat of teetering on the edge. Yet, the bottom can give way at any moment, plunging the tree into the treacherous rocks and rough waters below.

Many of us are like that tree: enjoying a beautiful view, feeling deeply rooted and safe, until some earth beneath us moves or our vantage point shifts. Suddenly we are confronted with the harsh reality of the fragility of life. We can find ourselves on a “precipice” like this as we face a variety of personal crises or stressors, or we can simply witness a loved one or client struggling at a defining moment and feel helpless and ineffective. Views from a Precipice was founded upon the idea that the unique view offered from such a vantage point can be transformational and that we can create a more solid foundation, even when building upon shaky ground.

Views from a Precipice offers a wide range of educational and supportive resources for people facing personal challenges, members of their support networks, and mental health providers.
